Questions About Psychotherapy

Explore Our Most Common Questions

Psychotherapy is a safe, confidential space to talk with a trained professional about what you’re going through and how you’re feeling. Together, we explore your thoughts, emotions, and patterns, and gently make sense of what’s happening in your life. Over time, therapy can help you gain insight and understanding allowing you to ‘get to know yourself better’.

Therapy is a collaborative process. It is a relationship but one where we work at your pace not ours. You will never have to talk about anything you’re not ready for.

Therapy is for anyone who wants support, not just for extreme situations or crises. Many people come to therapy when they notice things like:

· Feeling anxious, low, or on edge more often than usual

· Struggling to cope with stress, work, relationships, or life changes

· Feeling stuck in unhelpful patterns of behaviour or thinking

· Finding it hard to switch off, sleep, or enjoy things they used to

· Simply wanting to understand themselves better and grow

So, if you’re wondering whether therapy might help, that in itself is often a sign it could be useful. You don’t need to wait until things feel unbearable.

Psychotherapy can support adults with a wide range of concerns, including:

· Anxiety, panic, worry, and overthinking

· Low mood, depression, and loss of motivation

· Stress and burnout, including work-related stress

· Trauma, difficult past experiences, or abuse

· Grief, loss, and major life transitions

· Relationship difficulties, family problems, or loneliness

· Self-esteem, confidence, and identity issues

You don’t need a formal diagnosis to come to therapy. We can talk about whatever feels important to you.

At MIP we offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

· CBT

– Focuses on how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours interact

– Is structured and goal-oriented. Sessions are usually shorter-term

– Uses practical tools and strategies to help manage specific problems (e.g. OCD, anxiety, stress etc.)

· Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

– Explores the deeper roots of your difficulties, including past experiences and relationships

– Often longer-term and more open-ended

– Focuses on gaining insight, self-understanding, recurring patterns, and how the past and present are connected

In your initial consultation, we can help you decide which approach (or combination) is the best fit for you.

This varies from person to person and will depend on what you’d like support with. The length will also relate to what feels manageable for you.

· Many adults start with once weekly sessions while others have 2, 3 or 4 sessions a week

· Some people work short-term (for example with CBT 10-20 sessions is not uncommon). These sessions may focus on a specific issue

· Others find longer-term therapy helpful for deeper patterns or longstanding difficulties

At your initial consultation we’ll discuss this together and review as we go. You’re always welcome to talk about how your therapy is feeling and whether the pace and frequency seems right for you.

Yes, therapy is confidential. This means that what you share in sessions is not discussed with anyone else, except in very limited circumstances, or without your knowledge.

The main exceptions are:

· If there is a serious and immediate risk of harm to you or someone else

· If we are legally required to share information (for example, in certain safeguarding situations). Under no circumstances would we share or divulge anything without your prior knowledge.

· With a supervisor. This is to ensure you receive the best possible care and whilst this is a legal requirement in the UK in many other parts of the world this is not the case.

Your therapist will follow the ethical and legal standards of the country or region where you live or where they practise.

At your initial consultation we will clearly explain confidentiality, so you know exactly where you stand.

The relationship you have with your therapist is one of the most important parts of therapy.

When choosing a therapist, you might begin by looking their photo, or profile to help you consider. From here it might feel comfortable to set up an initial consultation session. As these are 50-minutes long you will be able to get a greater sense of how them and perhaps ask:

· Do I feel reasonably comfortable and understood by this person?

· Do they have experience with the kinds of issues I’m dealing with?

· Do I feel able to be honest with them, even if I feel unsure at first?

· Are they properly qualified and professionally registered?

It’s absolutely okay to try a first session and then decide whether it feels like a good fit. You are allowed to look for someone who feels like they seem right for you.

In your first therapy session, you can expect a calm, welcoming space to begin talking about what’s going on for you at a pace that feels comfortable. Your therapist will ask gentle questions to understand your needs, what brought you in, and what support might look like. There’s no pressure to share everything at once, it’s a chance to get to know each other, explore what you need, and see if the fit feels right.

Whilst the initial 15-minute consultation telephone call is free other fees vary. For example individual therapists have their own rates. Simply ask when getting in touch. We are happy to share any information you might need.

Whether you’re eligible for concession discounts i.e., are you in training.

Sometimes session fees can vary depending on the country or region you’re in. This is due to international exchange rates and banking fees etc. Unsure? Please ask us.

If you’re claiming through private health insurance sometimes fees are pre-set and applicable. This will depend on your insurer and how much they cover. If you’re unsure, you can contact your insurer confidentially to ask what’s covered.

We’re always happy to discuss options with you so you can make an informed decision.

At MiP we will always be clear and transparent about costs before you commit.

For many people, yes, online therapy can be insightful, useful and helpful. For many it can be just as effective as in-person sessions, and many people find it more convenient and less intimidating.

Benefits of online therapy include:

· Access from home or a private space, without travelling

· Greater flexibility with appointments, especially if you have a busy schedule or live in a different city or country

· The option to continue therapy even when you’re travelling or moving

What matters most is that you feel safe, heard, and able to talk openly. We can discuss your options and work out what is best for you.

Confidentiality is fundamental to effective psychological wellbeing. As such, MIP follows strict ethical, professional, and privacy standards so people in your organisation can feel safe engaging with us. We adhere to common UK and EU privacy laws and regulation but when working outside of these areas ensure to meet local criteria.

· Individual discussions are always confidential and handled with care. Only under legal considerations such as safeguarding matters would this ever alter, and never without discussion or informed consent.

· We do not share personal clinical information with the organisation without informed consent, except where there is a serious risk of harm or a legal obligation.

· For organisations, we provide de-identified, high-level themes and recommendations (not individual case details).

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you contact us. But you might start by looking at what your staff are experiencing day to day. Notice patterns: rising stress, conflict, burnout, uncertainty after change, or team leaders/managers feeling out of their depth. From there, you can think about what outcome you want—greater resilience, clearer communication, healthier leadership, or support during a specific transition. MIP can help with this process as we’ve seen organisations benefiting from support in aligning business culture, goals, and current pressures with staff understanding and performance.

Our process is designed to be clear and collaborative:

·  Initial conversation – We explore your situation, needs, and goals.

·  Assessment and proposal – We recommend suitable services and outline a tailored plan.

·  Agreement and scheduling – We confirm scope, timelines, regions/time zones, and logistics.

·  Delivery – We provide the agreed psychological support (individual, team, and/or organisational).

·  Review and follow-up – We evaluate impact, share insights, and discuss ongoing or future support.

Communication is kept straightforward and transparent throughout, whether we’re working with you in the UK, EU, Asia, across all three, or anywhere in the world.

Costs depend on:

· The type of service (individual support, workshops, assessments, etc.)

· The number of people or teams involved

· The duration and intensity of the programme

· Whether you prefer a one-off intervention or ongoing support

We will begin by having an initial video meeting to talk through your needs and from there we will put together a package and proposal. This will include:

· Clear, upfront pricing for the specific services to meet your needs

· Proposals customised and aligned with your budget and priorities

· Options for ongoing support packages or retainers so you can access expert psychological support when you need it

Contact us to discuss your organisation, location(s), and goals, and we can provide an indicative range or a detailed quote.
