World Penguin Day and Mental Health
MiP is celebrating World Penguin Day and at these wonderful creatures. Why? Because we see penguins as symbols of resilience, community, and balance in some of the harshest environments on Earth.
When I see penguins, I always feel touched because they remind us of something deeply human. Like humans’ penguins:
- Thrive in connection with each other – like when they huddle together for warmth and safety.
- Adapt and persevere, even in the most challenging times and conditions.
- Need a healthy environment to stay well, both physically and mentally.
As climate change continues to impact wildlife and ecosystems, it also affects our own sense of security and wellbeing. This is sometimes being called eco-anxiety. For me, this is important because it highlights the link between the world in which we live – from our homes to our cities, countries and world – and our mental health and wellbeing.
I see recognising the connection between our mental health and the planet’s health as a bridge between compassion (for others and ourselves) and taking steps to change.
So today, let’s take a moment to:
- Think about penguins as a way of thinking about others
- Look after yourself – maybe spend time in nature!
- Think about penguins as a way of thinking about others you care about and ask how they are doing
- Talk about how environmental changes make you feel
Caring for the planet and caring for our minds go hand in hand.
